White space is not wasted space

2 min read

Having paid for the paper, the natural instinct is to use all of it. That instinct is responsible for more mediocre print than any technical fault.

What space actually does

Empty area creates hierarchy. When everything is the same size and equally spaced, the eye has nowhere to land and reads nothing. When one thing is surrounded by space, the eye goes there first.

It also signals confidence. A card with one name and a lot of paper around it reads as a business that does not need to explain itself.

How much is enough

A practical starting point on a visiting card is to fill no more than about half of the available area and let the rest be paper. That sounds extreme until you look at cards you have actually kept, which are almost always sparse.

On a flyer the proportion shifts because there is more to say, but the principle holds: one element should clearly dominate, and there should be a visible margin of nothing around it.

Making space without losing content

The usual objection is that everything on the card is necessary. It rarely is.

  • Drop the second phone number. People call one.
  • Drop the postal address unless customers visit.
  • Replace three social handles with one, or a QR code.
  • Move the tagline to the reverse, or remove it.

The specifications this applies to

For reference, here is how it works out on the products this comes up on most often.

  • Standard Visiting Cards — 89 × 51 mm finished, 3 mm bleed, 300 DPI minimum, from ₹2 per unit with a minimum of 100.
  • Posters — 297 × 420 mm finished, 3 mm bleed, 200 DPI minimum, from ₹45 per unit with a minimum of 10.

Ordering

Every file is checked automatically before printing, so a mistake in any of this is caught while it can still be corrected rather than after a run is on paper.

Standard delivery is free to every PIN code in India — two working days to a metro, up to twelve to the islands — and prices include GST, so the figure on the product page is the figure charged. Add a GSTIN at checkout and the invoice carries it for input credit.

Before you send it

Print the design at actual size on an ordinary office printer and look at it on paper rather than on screen. Almost every problem — type too small, contrast too low, something too close to the edge — becomes obvious immediately at real size and is invisible at 200% zoom on a monitor.

Then read it out loud. It is the most reliable way to catch a missing word, and a missing word on 500 printed cards is not a small correction.
