Flex Banner or Canvas Banner? Which One to Order

5 min read

If the banner is going outdoors, order a vinyl flex banner. If it is going indoors, behind a stage, on an exhibition wall or anywhere it will be photographed, order a canvas fabric flex banner. Our Vinyl Flex Banners are 440 gsm PVC, weatherproof and UV resistant, and made for gates, railings and shopfronts. Our Canvas Fabric Flex Banners are printed on a matte, lightly textured polyester canvas that does not throw glare under lights and looks softer and more finished up close. Both come in the same sizes, with the same hemming and eyelets, from one square foot.

The flex banner vs canvas banner question usually comes from someone planning an event, a shop opening or an exhibition stall, who sees two banners at the same sizes and cannot tell from the photos which one they need. This guide covers what actually differs, where each one goes wrong, and when it is worth ordering one of each.

What is the difference between a flex banner and a canvas banner?

The material, and therefore where the banner is happy. A vinyl flex banner is printed on 440 gsm outdoor PVC flex. It is stiff enough to hang flat when tied off at the eyelets, it sheds rain, and it is built to sit in the sun. It has a slight sheen, which is what makes it look bright from across a road.

A canvas fabric flex banner is printed on polyester canvas with a matte, lightly textured surface. It hangs with a softer drape, the colours read as richer and less plasticky up close, and because the surface is matte it does not bounce back stage lights, ring lights or camera flash. That is the whole reason it exists.

Everything else is shared. Both are sold per square foot from one square foot, in standard sizes of three by six, four by eight, six by ten and eight by twelve feet, or a custom width from one foot up to twenty feet. Both are finished with eyelets every two feet, a rod pocket top and bottom, or no finishing at all, and both offer express production that is two days faster.

Which banner is better for outdoor use?

Vinyl flex. It is the one we sell as weatherproof and UV resistant, and it is the material that survives a monsoon on a gate or a summer on a shop front. If the banner will be tied to a railing, hung across a street, or left up for weeks, there is no real decision to make.

Canvas fabric flex is described and made for indoor display. A short outdoor event under a canopy is fine, but it is not the banner to leave in the rain, and we would rather you ordered the right one than found out the hard way.

Which banner is better for a stage backdrop or photo wall?

Canvas fabric flex. A backdrop is lit and photographed, and a glossy PVC surface under stage lights or a phone flash produces bright hotspots that ruin pictures. The matte canvas surface spreads light evenly, so faces and logos come out clean in every photo.

This is why it suits wedding and reception backdrops, award nights, product launches, selfie walls, conference stages and the back wall of an exhibition stall. For a photo wall, choose eyelets every two feet if it is tying to a frame, or a rod pocket top and bottom if it is hanging from a pole and needs to stay flat.

Does a canvas banner look more premium than flex?

Up close, yes. Flex is designed to be read from a distance; canvas is designed to be looked at. At a reception desk, inside a showroom, on a café wall or in a boutique, canvas reads as a fitted piece of decor rather than a temporary sign.

From across a road, the advantage disappears. The sheen on PVC flex actually helps it catch daylight, and nobody passing at speed is inspecting the texture. Paying for canvas on a gate banner buys nothing the viewer will notice.

How long does each take to print?

Vinyl flex banners take two working days plus transit. Canvas fabric flex banners take three working days plus transit. Express production cuts two days off either, and standard delivery is free across India. If your event date is fixed, order canvas a day earlier than you would order flex.

Is a canvas banner more expensive than flex?

Yes. Canvas fabric flex costs noticeably more per square foot than PVC flex, because it is a dearer material. Both are priced by area, so cost scales with the size you choose; the banners and standees cost guide shows how the two compare at each size.

The practical consequence is that canvas earns its cost on banners people stand in front of, and flex earns its keep on banners people drive past. A large outdoor banner in canvas is money spent on a quality nobody sees.

What artwork do I need for a large banner?

The same for both. Supply artwork at 100 DPI or more at the final printed size, in CMYK, with 25 mm of bleed on every edge. A banner is viewed from further away than a print, so 100 DPI at full size is enough, but a logo pulled off a website and stretched to eight feet will still look soft.

Keep text and logos well inside the edges, clear of where the eyelets and hems go. Our pre-press team checks every file before it is printed and will tell you if something is too low in resolution or too close to the edge.

Our recommendation

Outdoors, on a gate, railing, shopfront or street: order Vinyl Flex Banners with eyelets every two feet. Indoors, behind a stage, on an exhibition wall, at a reception desk or anywhere it will be photographed: order Canvas Fabric Flex Banners, with a rod pocket if it needs to hang flat from a pole.

Running an event with both, such as a shop opening with a banner outside and a photo wall inside, order one of each from the same artwork. If you would rather buy a backdrop as a fixed-size piece in satin or polyester, Fabric Banners offer those materials by the banner instead of by the square foot.
